SMPM Favourite Abbie Ozard Channels Pale Waves With New Single
Featured in our very first edition of Ones to Watch back in February, indie pop starlet Abbie Ozard has released her second single of 2020. Following on from banger 'Crocodile Tears', 'Pink Sky (Endless Summer)' is again a step towards this artist fully finding her sound, and this time has her once again showcasing her ability to create dreamy soundscapes and big hooks.
Lush synth pads and a crunchy lead kick off this track before we hear one of Abbie’s best vocal performances yet. The artist herself has declared this to be one of her most personal songs to date and that it is evident from her emotional and passionate vocal delivery throughout the single's three minute runtime. Stepping away from her usual Clairo-esque vocal performances. This time Abbie’s vocal work has an edge and you know she means every single syllable she utters. Seemingly influenced by Pale Waves’ 2018 shimmering debut My Mind Makes Noises, 'Pink Sky' is a dreamy, festival-ready banger.
This is the first time Abbie’s voice has reminded me of Heather Baron-Gracie, yet it still retains a distinctive tone. Upbeat and catchy, a track like this is exactly what we need in this gloomy period. After a slew of softer singles, it is refreshing to hear a development in her sound, and would not be unusual to hear a track like this blasting out of the PA at your favourite indie festival or club night. Rich Turvey’s (Blossoms, The Coral) production input is evident, as every riff and melody is an ear worm, and cements this track as an excellent addition to the landscape of UK indie rock in 2020.
Abbie Ozard is easily one of the most exciting artists on the UK indie scene right now. 'Pink Sky' is a stunning track, and I absolutely cannot wait to hear Abbie’s further exploration down this road. When she’s a household name, we at SMPM can’t wait to look back smugly and say that we predicted it.
