SINGLE REVIEW: Cassia - Do Right

Do right and let the rest follow

Cassia - Do Right (2020 Pon't Danic Music)

Words by the WONDERFUL Karl Johnson of Hard of Hearing Music

Macclesfield trio Cassia are cut from the same premium British indie cloth as heroes Foals and Alt-J. Cassia may well be earlier into their journey than those aforementioned musical legends, but their priorities certainly seem similarly aligned.

On new single ‘Do Right’, Cassia place emphasis on beat and groove rather than love-struck lyrics when it comes to their songwriting and structure, resulting in one of the best tunes to come out of the UK indie scene this month. The northern trio’s superb new single combines tropical shades of jazz-tinged guitarplay, with a backbone of Jake Leff's dance-ready drum beats and bass lines from Lou Cotterill. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that the band’s influences run as far reaching as Reggae or central African rhythms; such is the style of the vocal delivery and all-around sound.

Cassia’s carefree nature and approach to music is the perfect balance of art and escapism. The off-kilter delivery of frontman Rob Ellis, deftly executed vocal harmonies and the group's distinctive way around a pop hook make for a joyous listen. 'Do Right' is short, sweet and entirely excellent. There's not much more to say other than that you should already have this song locked into your playlists to power some positivity into your lockdown.

Last year the band released their debut LP Replica via London-based label Distiller Records (The Ninth Wave, Anteros, Bloody Knees), fulfil all of your twitchy-pop desires within.
