Ben Wheadon writes about Thomas Headon (no relation)
According to his Spotify 'about' section, Thomas Headon won his Year 10 maths award. I don't know him, but I'm proud of him. He's also a songwriter, which is impressive as well, but that maths award? That's pretty fucking cool.
New single Car Window is a wonderful spark of lyrical creativity. Transporting listeners into a romantically wistful daydream, Headon describes himself looking at "the girl in the car window opposite me / she keeps on staring at me / does she love me?" in a comfortably inviting realm of romance. Sitting on top of a satisfyingly jumpy beat and bassline, the song bobs from ear to ear with the kind of happily bouncing instrumental that wouldn't feel out of place behind artists like Samm Henshaw or Kaiit. The songwriting is pleasant and satisfyingly self-aware, and paints Headon as a particularly impressive emerging talent in the UK independent scene.
Headon is a charmingly interesting lyricist, with the rolled tone of his washed-out guitar and layered 'faux-vinyl' scratch suiting his voice perfectly. His rhymes are dexterously deployed, his ad-libs are funny and his voice is a comforting blend of smug apprehension. I am running out of adjectives, so just go and listen to this song. Don't get angry at me if you can't get it out of your head.
